“Among the captives seized in the tents of the Banu Hawazen that had been pitched near the battlefield was an old Bedouin woman of the Bani Saad who loudly claimed that she was the Prophet’s sister. At first the Muslim soldiers merely laughed at her, but her persistence eventually won the day and two of them escorted her to Muhammad’s distinctive tent, which was made of strips of leather dyed red. He came out to greet them. The old woman stepped forward. ‘O Muhammad, I am your sister’, she said simply. ‘Have you any proof of that?’ Muhammad asked her, for he did not recognize her by her face ... She replied … Muhammad was overcome with joy to see her again, and embraced her warmly. He spread his cloak for her in the time-honoured gesture as he stunned everyone and they sat down together.”

Narrated by Ibn Abbas, “... Umar stood up ... said, ‘Now then, I am going to tell you something ... the pledge of allegiance given to Abu Bakr was given suddenly and it was successful. No doubt, it was like that, but Allah saved from its evil ... after the death of the Prophet we were informed that the Ansar disagreed with us and gathered in the shed of Bani Saadah ... I said to Abu Bakr, “Let’s go to these Ansari brothers of ours.” ... And then one of Ansari said, “... There should be one ruler from us and one from you.” Then there was a hue and cry among the gathering and their voices rose so that I was afraid there might be great disagreement, so I said, “O Abu Bakr! Hold your hand out.” He held his hand out and I pledged allegiance to him, and then all the emigrants gave the pledge of allegiance and so did the Ansar afterwards. And so we became victorious over Saad bin Ubadah ...’ ...”

Narrated by Aisha, “Fatima the daughter of the Prophet sent someone to Abu Bakr, asking for her inheritance of what Allah’s Messenger had left of the property bestowed on him by Allah from the Fai (i.e. booty gained without fighting) in Madina, and Fadak, and what remained of the Khumus of the Khaybar booty. On that, Abu Bakr said, ‘Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said, “Our property is not inherited. Whatever we leave, is Sadaqah ...” ... So Abu Bakr refused to give anything of that to Fatima. So she became angry with Abu Bakr and kept away from him, and did not task to him till she died. She remained alive for six months after the death of the Prophet. When she died, her husband Ali, buried her at night without informing Abu Bakr and he said the funeral prayer by himself ... So Ali sought reconciliation with Abu Bakr and gave him an oath of allegiance. Ali had not given the oath of allegiance during those months ...”
